Rockford, Ill- The Rockford IceHogs opened their exhibition schedule on Saturday night in impressive fashion, knocking out the Quad City Mallards 8-2 at the Rockford MetroCentre. The IceHogs jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back to take the preseason contest. Winger Greg Barber chipped in four assists against his former team.

The Hogs grabbed an early 1-0 lead when rookie winger Steve Yetman fired a pass from Barber past Mallards goalie Terry Friesen at 4:35. Another rookie, defenseman Ryan Carrigan, pushed Rockford's lead to 2-0 at 15:43, sending the Hogs to the locker room up a pair.

Rockford later exploded for four second period goals. Center Alex Kim got things started for the Hogs at 1:23 with a power play marker. Winger Preston Mizzi extended the Hogs lead at 5:27 before a quick strike Hogs offense put the game out of reach before the second break. Winger Jason Ralph got into the mix at 17:12 followed by Kim's second tally of the night at 17:45, making the score 6-0.

In the third, the Mallards showed signs of life with a pair of early goals in the final frame. Winger Glenn Detulleo put Quad City on the board at 2:49 making the score 6-1. Mallards winger Chad Woollard then netted a power play goal at 4:51, cutting the Hogs lead to four. Rockford, however, responded with two more goals to close out the scoring. Defenseman Corey Hessler accounted for the final two tallies at 16:17 and 18:35.

Goaltender Ronnie Vogel played the entire contest to pick up the win. Vogel turned away 34 shots in the winning effort. The Mallards starter Friesen, stopped 22 of 28 Hogs shots in the first two periods before being relieved by Kristoffer Martin in the third. Martin blocked two of the Hogs four third period shots.

Opening Night: Friday, October 21 vs. Elmira Jackals. Game time is 7:05 p.m. The IceHogs open their seventh season on Friday against the Jackals. The first 5,000 fans to the game will receive a 2005-06 IceHogs Magnet Schedule courtesy of FatWallet.com and 17-WTVO.
