Rockford Snaps Four-Game Run

One can always guarantee a offensive shootout when the Rockford Lightning is involved and this night was no different as the Grand Rapids HOOPS fell 139-135 at the Rockford MetroCenter on Friday night. Ronnie Fields paced the Lightning with 41 points (14-20 FG) as the conference leaders took six of seven quarter points.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the HOOPS, despite seven players scoring in double-figures. Jerald Honeycutt and Alex Scales led the way with 23 points, while Immanuel McElroy added 22 points of his own. Kevin Simmons also scored 19 points for Grand Rapids, while Olden Polynice hauled in a season-high 17 rebounds. Kareem Reid (12 points, seven assists) and Tim Kisner (11 points, 3-3 3FG) round out the offensive standouts.

The night belonged to Fields, however, as he scored 26 of his points in the second-half , including several key baskets down the stretch to preserve the win for the Lightning. Albert White contributed 26 points for Rockford, while Marshall Phillips also added 21 points.

Grand Rapids (17-18) capitalized on a 13-1 second quarter run to take a slim 64-63 first half lead. In a foul plagued night, the teams combined to commit 32 fouls in the first half. Scales led the way with 19 points heading into the lockerroom.

Rockford (23-12) was able to take the final two quarters, but they did not come easily. Teddy Dupay (16 points) connected on two free thrown with 13 seconds remaining to seal the win as the Lightning was able to overcome a 124-117 Grand Rapids’ lead early in the fourth quarter.

Grand Rapids will now head to Gary to face the Steelheads on Saturday night at the Genesis Convention Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. EST.
