Rock Sign Johnny Powless to 1-Year Deal
November 29, 2018 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Toronto Rock News Release
Oakville, ON - Toronto Rock Owner, President and GM Jamie Dawick today announced the signing of Restricted Free Agent Forward Johnny Powless to a one-year agreement. The Rock acquired Powless in a midsummer deal that saw Dan Taylor go to Calgary and Powless land in Toronto as a part of a three-way transaction that also involved New England.
The signing is pending league approval.
"I'm pretty excited to be here and be close to home," explained Powless as the ink dried on his newly signed contract. "I'm excited for the season to begin and for my family to watch me play here."
The 25-year old from Six Nations, ON knows how to win. Powless already has four NLL Championships to his credit in just seven pro seasons.
"You just have to work hard and buy-in to the structure and game plan set out by the coaches," explained Powless when asked about the keys to success in the NLL. "I think if we work hard and take care of business on the floor we'll be alright."
Powless hit a career-high 72 points in 2016 with Georgia, but 2017 might be regarded as his best pro season when he put up 50 points in just 10 games after missing the early portion of the campaign. That pace would have shattered his single-season high putting him in the 90-point range. The Swarm went on to win the NLL Cup that season and Powless netted 12 points in just three playoff games.
Powless may see his first action in a Rock uniform as early as this Sunday's exhibition game against the Saskatchewan Rush at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre in Oakville, ON at 1:00 p.m.
The Rock's Home Opener will be played on Fri., Dec. 28 against the Georgia Swarm at Scotiabank Arena.
2018-19 Toronto Rock Single Game Tickets, Season Tickets and Season Passes along with the new 4 Game Pack and 6 Ticket Flex Pack are on sale now. To purchase or for more information, please visit torontorock.com or call 416-596-3075.
