Toronto Rock News Release
The Toronto Rock Lacrosse Club and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd. announced Tuesday that they have entered into a contract that will see Air Canada Centre remain the home of the championship Lacrosse Club for the next three years with a subsequent two-year renewal option. As per the Toronto Rock club policy, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"We've had a great three years here at Air Canada Centre," said Brad Watters, president, Toronto Rock Lacrosse Club. "We've just won our fourth Champions Cup... a very big win for us. On top of great performance on the turf, we also have the best fans in the league, so it only makes sense that the best building in the league should be home to the Toronto Rock."
The Rock played its fifth championship game in as many years May 3 defeating the Knighthawks in Rochester, New York to win the 2003 Champions Cup.
"Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment is pleased to have this championship lacrosse team on-board for another three years," said Robert Hunter, senior vice president and general manager Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd. "Toronto Rock lacrosse is not only a great part of Toronto sports, but also enhances Air Canada Centre's offering. It is an excellent compliment to Leafs hockey and Raptors basketball. The fans love the game, it draws great attendance and we're delighted to be home to the Rock."
Air Canada Centre, an entirely privately funded building project, opened in February 1999. Since then it has been an industry leader with fiscal 2002 posting a record year for the building. Gross ticket sales to live entertainment events at Air Canada Centre in 2002 exceeded $38 million with attendance surpassing 788,000.
The building is owned by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd., recently named one of Canada's top 75 companies of all time by Canadian Business magazine.
