New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - Mike McCardell engaged in a pitcher's duel with Reading's Michael Stutes in the early portion of the game, but McCardell and the Rock Cats came out on top with a 3-2 victory. The Rock Cats (64-61) have won four in a row and remain in second place in the Northern Division.

Both McCardell (3-1) and Stutes (8-7) tacked zeros on the board through the first three innings. The R-Phils managed to cross the plate first when Mike Spidale singled, Brian Stavisky followed with a one-out double, and Neil Sellers knocked in Spidale with a ground out to shortstop for a 1-0 lead.

The Rock Cats battled back in the fifth inning. Steve Singleton started the inning off by lining a base hit to center field. Yancarlos Ortiz followed with a sacrifice bunt down the third baseline, but a throwing error by Sellers allowed Ortiz to reach first safely as Singleton moved to second. Both runners advanced a base on a sac bunt by Danny Lehmann. Brandon Roberts then delivered a single to left field that scored Singleton to tie the game.

In the sixth, Juan Portes launched a solo shot over the left field wall to put the ‘Cats ahead, 2-1. The Rock Cats tacked on another run in the seventh when Roberts tripled and scored on Hughes' base hit to right field.

Reading's Kevin Nelson led off the ninth with a home run off of closer Alex Burnett to bring the Phillies within one run. Burnett struck out the next two batters and forced Quintin Berry to ground out to second base to end the game. Burnett notched his sixth save.

McCardell finished with one run on six hits and no walks through seven innings.
