New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats - the Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins - made two roster moves today. The Rock Cats added infielder Alejandro Machado - who made his Major League Debut with the Boston Red Sox in 2005 - to its roster while outfielder Matt Moses was placed on the disabled list with a finger injury. Both moves are effective immediately.
The Rock Cats received Machado from the Ft. Myers Miracle of the Florida State League. The 6'0," 185-lb. switch-hitting infielder started the season with Triple-A Rochester - where he batted .222 with five RBI and two runs scored in 18 games - before he landed on the disabled list with a knee injury. Machado, 27, had surgery to repair cartilage in the knee before rehabbing and finally returning to action with the Gulf Coast League Twins and then Ft. Myers. In 12 games with the Miracle, he batted .277 (13-for-47) with three doubles, three RBI, and seven runs.
Machado was originally signed by the Atlanta Braves as an undrafted free agent in 1998. He spent time in the Braves, Royals, Brewers, and Expos/Nationals organizations. In 2005, Machado was acquired by the Boston Red Sox from the Washington Nationals at the start of Spring Training and spent all but the final five days of the season with Triple-A Pawtucket before a September call-up to Boston. The Caracas, VZ native made his Major League Debut on September 2 of that year and played in 10 total games for the Red Sox, batting .200 (1-for-5) with one double and four runs scored while splitting his time among four positions. He was selected by the Twins from the Nationals in the 2006 Rule V Draft, but missed the entire 2007 season with a torn labrum in his right shoulder. He spent the entire 2008 season in Rochester, batting .338 with 16 doubles, two home runs, 31 RBI, and 33 runs in 54 games with the Red Wings.
In the second move of the day, Moses was placed on the disabled list with a strained right finger. The former Gatorade Virginia Player of the Year and 2003 graduate of Mills Godwin High School (VA) was selected in the first round with the 21st overall pick in the 2003 Draft. Prior to the 2008 season, Baseball America listed Moses as the Twins' 12th best prospect. The 6'0," 210-lb. Moses is currently in his fifth season with the Rock Cats and stands as the franchise's career RBI leader with 310. Moses, 24, is hitting .224 with 10 doubles, 7 home runs, 43 RBI, and 34 runs this season.
