DOING A JIG WITH THE PIGS: The Rochester Red Wings tonight play the 2nd game of their 3-game series vs. Lehigh Valley (Phillies), trailing International League Wild Card-leading Pawtucket (Red Sox) by 5.0 games with 12 remaining. Following 2 more with the IronPigs, the Red Wings hit the road Saturday for a 5-game series at Buffalo (Mets), which includes a doubleheader Sunday.

a Beginning tonight, all but one of Rochester's final 12 games can be seen on Time Warner Cable Sports (TWCS) Channel 26. The lone exception is September 1, when Syracuse University opens its football season against Northwestern University.

a The Wings are 5 games into a stretch of playing their final 17 contests against IL North opponents and they are 1-4 thus far. Rochester is just 26-42 against its division rivals overall. The Wings went 40-24 outside the IL North.

ROSTER NEWS: Lefthander Pedro Hernandez today was placed on the 7-Day Disabled List with a left latissimus dorsi strain. The 23-year-old, who was acquired from the Chicago White Sox in the Francisco Liriano trade, exited his start Tuesday at Pawtucket after just 2.1 innings due to the injury. Hernandez is 0-2 with a 5.14 ERA in 4 starts with the Red Wings.

a Righthander Kyle Gibson is scheduled to take Hernandez's spot in the rotation and start Saturday at Buffalo. Gibson has given up 2 runs in 7.0 innings in 2 starts with Single-A Fort Myers since coming off the Disabled List. Minnesota's first-round pick (22nd overall) in the 2009 draft had "Tommy John" ligament-replacement surgery on his right elbow last September. He made 9 rehab appearances with the GCL Twins before joining Fort Myers, posting a 2.45 ERA.

BAD TIME FOR A SKID: The Red Wings have lost 2 in a row and 5 of their last 6. They are 7-10 since their season-best 7-game winning streak July 29-August 5. Despite the recent downturn, the Red Wings are still 46-36 since sitting a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 20-30 on May 28. Going back further, Rochester is 52-43 beginning May 15.

ZEROES ACROSS THE BOARD: The Red Wings have been shut out in 2 straight games and in 3 of their last 4 contests. Rochester hasn't scored in 18 straight innings since plating a run in the 9th inning Monday at Pawtucket. The Red Wings also were held scoreless in 2 straight games June 11-12 at Indianapolis (Pirates). That consecutive scoreless innings streak was actually 27 innings when taking into account scoreless innings in games on both ends of the shutouts.

a The Wings have just 5 hits in the last 2 games, all singles, and they are a combined 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position in that time.

LET'S NOT GO THERE: The Red Wings need a victory tonight to avoid dipping below .500 for the first time since being 55-56 on July 31 after a 10-8 win in 12 innings at Columbus (Indians). The Red Wings in 2012 are looking for their first winning season since the 2008 club went 74-70. Rochester needs to win 7 of its final 12 games to finish above .500.

a The Red Wings also need a win tonight to avoid their 5th straight loss at Frontier Field, which would match their season-worst skids from April 25-May 2 and July 26-August 8.

FIELD DAY: The Red Wings have just 5 games remaining at Frontier Field, where they are 41-34. The 41 wins along Morrie Silver Way are the club's most since going 46-26 in 2008. Beginning July 24, the start of a 4-game series vs. Syracuse (Nationals), Rochester has won just 6 of its last 17 games at Frontier Field.

A LITTLE HELP HERE: Despite being just 11-10 in August, the Red Wings pitching staff has a 3.52 ERA (77 ER/197.0 IP) during the month. That is good for their lowest ERA of any calendar month this season, slightly ahead of April's 3.73 ERA (82 ER/197.2 IP).

a Red Wings starting pitchers have a 3.60 ERA (20 ER/50.0 IP) in the last 10 games, but they are just 2-5 to show for it. In the same 10-game span, the Wings offense has scored just 29 runs for an average of 2.9 runs per game.

DOCTOR, DOCTOR, GIVE ME THE NEWS: Pedro Hernandez today became the 7th player, the 6th pitcher, on the Red Wings' Disabled List. Rochester has seen 16 different players spend 19 stints on the DL in 2012, missing a combined 570 games.

a Leading the way is righthander Carlos Gutierrez, who has missed 95 games over 2 stints with right shoulder tendinitis and a right shoulder labrum strain.
