February 22, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Rochester RazorSharks News Release
Rochester, NY. The American Basketball Association (ABA) officially announced that the ABA Championship Playoffs - The Great Eight - will be held at The Blue Cross Arena, the home of the Rochester RazorSharks, on Wednesday, March 22; Saturday, March 25 and Sunday, March 26.
"The decision was made at the ABA League Owners Meeting in Florida in conjunction with the ABA All-Star Weekend. It was not a difficult decision at all," stated ABA CEO Joe Newman. "The Rochester organizaton has been extraordinary all season; the facility is tremendous and the RazorSharks have shown that their marketing skills are outstanding. It should be a gala event with the eight best teams playing over the three day period."
The RazorSharks will hold a Press Conference today, Wed, Feb 22 at The Blue Cross Arena, atrium entrance, corner of Exchange Blvd and Broad Street. There, RazorSharks COO & GM Orest Hrywnak along with head coach Rod Baker and players as well as Greg Graham, head coach of the Indiana Alley Cats, will discuss the Playoffs as well as give a preview of the game between the #1 Alley Cats and the #2 RazorSharks to be played at BCA on Thu, Feb 23 at 705pm.
The final eight teams will all play on Wednesday in four games, with the tip-off times at 12 noon, 230pm, 5pm and 730pm. The single-elimination tournament continues on Saturday, March 25 with games at 1pm and 330pm and the ABA Championship Game scheduled for 2pm on Sunday, March 26.
"We are pleased and honored to have been chosen for this very important event especially with this being our first year in the league," stated Orest Hrywnak. "Having just watched the fine Florida Pit Bulls organization host a wonderful All Star event, we know that we have our work cut out for us to top it - and you had better believe we're going to make this something really special."
Over 150 players, coaches, staff, league officials and scouts will converge on Rochester for the five-day event. The downtown Clarion Riverside is the official host hotel of the ABA Championships.
Through the ABA's weekly Pit Bull Power Rankings, the top 24 teams will be ranked that will participate in the playoffs with the top eight teams receiving a first round bye. In the first round, teams ranked #8 through #16 will host the clubs ranked #17 thru #24 in the single elimination tournament the weekend of Mar 11-14. The following weekend, Mar 17-20, the remaining 16 teams will play to determine which eight teams travel to Rochester for The Great Eight.
