Fayetteville Patriots News Release

Roanoke jumped out to an early lead and despite the Fayetteville Patriots' best efforts to overcome the Dazzle's fast start, they simply couldn't. The Dazzle earned a 111-104 win in Fayetteville as the Patriots lost their fourth straight. The Dazzle meanwhile, moved to within 3 ½ games behind frontrunner Charleston with the win.

Geoff Owens had 19 points and 12 rebounds, seven of them coming on the offensive end. Marque Perry also posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 assists.

"They just out-toughed us tonight,'' Patriots coach Jeff Capel said. "We get off to a slow start, cameback, and then we get out to the same slow start in the fourth quarter. They were just tougher than us tonight."

Six-and-half minutes into the game, the Dazzle jumped out to a 19-4 lead. It forced Capel to remove all five of us his starters. The lineup of Chris Christoffersen, Britton Johnsen, Bryan Lucas, Junie Sanders and newcomer Kenny Satterfield helped the Patriots move to within seven by the end of the first quarter, and a Johnsen jump shot tied the game at 34. After trailing by four at the half, the Patriots were even able to grab their first lead on a Kent Williams 3-pointer that gave the Patriots a 54-52 lead in the third quarter.

But the Patriots never saw the lead again after Perry completed a 3-point play that gave the Dazzle a 68-67 lead with 5:44 remaining in the third quarter. Matt Carroll increased Roanoke's lead to six at the end of the third quarter with a 3-pointer.

Carroll's three would be a gloomy prelude to the Patriots fourth quarter. Roanoke outscored Fayetteville 16-10 to start the fourth quarter. The Dazzle held a nine-point lead with less than four minutes remaining, but the Patriots were again able to cut into Roanoke's lead. Jason Capel's layup with 1:27 remaining pulled the Patriots to within three, 105-102.But the Dazzle hit eight straight free throws in the final two minutes of the game to seal the win.

"Obviously we miss Omar Cook,'' said Williams about the former Patriots guard who is currently playing for the Portland Trail Blazers.

"We're still getting used to playing without him because guys were accustomed to getting their offense from him. He was great at getting guys the ball where they could score. We just brought in two new point guards who are going to help us with that, but there is going to be an adjustment period there. But we don't have long to adjust."

One of those new point guards, Satterfield, led the Patriots with 22 points and eight assists. Jason Capel and Johnsen had 14 points apiece. The Patriots have lost four straight for the first time since December of 2001. They play again tonight against the Huntsville Flight. Roanoke travels to Asheville to play the Altitude tonight.
