
Roanoke Ownership Group Announced
March 15, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2) News Release
LAKE ST. LOUIS, MO â The United Hockey League (UHL) announced Tuesday morning the relocation of the Port Huron Beacons to Roanoke, Virginia beginning with the 2005-2006 season.
"We are pleased that Ken and Kristen Dixon have the opportunity to remain within the United Hockey League. Their passion and dedication, along with their ability to run a successful hockey operation, allowed the Board of Governors' decision regarding their relocation to Roanoke to be a very easy one. Once again, the Board of Governors have shown their dedication to helping another member within the UHL," stated UHL President/CEO Richard Brosal.
The Dixons have been with the United Hockey League for three consecutive seasons and have contributed largely to the success and expansion of the league.
"We appreciate the spirit in which our partners continue to work together in the United Hockey League. We are looking forward to bringing professional hockey back to Roanoke and are thankful to our partners for their support," stated Roanoke team owner Kristen Dixon.
The team will play at the 8,642-seat Roanoke Civic Center Coliseum in Roanoke, Virginia in the upcoming 2005-06 season.
The Roanoke Sports Group will allow the official team name to be selected by fans. The "Name the Team" Contest will begin today, Tuesday, March 15, 2005, exclusively on the official site of the United Hockey League. Submission forms will be available through Thursday, March 31, 2005.
"We are certainly pleased and excited to see the momentum building for UHL's arrival in Roanoke," said Roanoke Mayor C. Nelson Harris. "This latest announcement of the owners and the contest is yet another great example of the UHL's commitment to Roanoke and all of the hockey fans in the area."
The official team name and contest winner will be announced on Saturday, April 9, 2005 at the Roanoke Civic Center. The Richmond RiverDogs and Motor City Mechanics will face-off at 7:35 p.m. In honor of the Roanoke Sports Group, the Richmond RiverDogs will be renamed the Roanoke RiverDogs on Friday, April 8th and Saturday, April 9, 2005.
