Roadrunners Take Game One from Cats

FORT WORTH, Texas - Derek Perren drove in four RBI leading the Edinburg Roadrunners to a 12-8 victory over the Fort Worth Cats in game one of the best-of-five United League Championship series Friday night at LaGrave Field.

Perren, who finished the night three-for-five with a double, led an Edinburg offense that pounded out 16 hits against three Fort Worth pitchers.

The Roadrunners (1-0) jumped out to the early lead against former Roadrunner Blake Parry (0-1). Three singles in the top of the first loaded the bases for Perren who then hit a two-run single. Stantrel Smith then followed with a two-run single of his own giving them the 4-0 lead.

After the Cats (0-1) scored a run in the bottom of the first, Edinburg scored three runs in the bottom of the second. Carlos Hereaud started the scoring with an RBI single that scored Vincent Blue from second. One out later, Perren picked up two more RBI with a two-run single that pushed the Roadrunners lead 7-1.

Former Roadrunner R.J. Harris hit an RBI single to center in the bottom of the second making it 7-2 but Edinburg answered back with a run in the top of the fourth extending their lead to 8-2.

Derek Marshall cut Edinburg's lead in half with a two-run home run but the Roadrunners answered again in the top of the fifth. Blue recorded a two-run single and then Wilmer Pino delivered an RBI single that made it 11-4.

Another former Roadrunner, C.J. Beatty, hit an RBI ground out that score Jose Ruiz in the bottom of the fifth that cut into the Edinburg lead 11-5.

Julio Castro (1-0) pitched five innings and allowed five runs on eight hits with three strike outs for the win.

After Edinburg added a run in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Felix Molina, the Cats got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run double by Ruiz that made it 12-7 Roadrunners.

Billy Petrick then came in to pitch a scoreless seventh and eighth innings keeping the Cats off the board.

A throwing error in the bottom of the ninth allowed a run to score for the Cats but Rusty Jones retired the side giving Edinburg the 12-8 victory.

The Roadrunners and Cats will play game two of the best-of-five United League Championship series Saturday night at LaGrave Field. Aaron Tullo is expected to face Steve Barnes with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Edinburg will host game three of the best-of-five championship series on Sunday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased at the Edinburg front office or by visiting www.etix.com. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
