
Riversharks win wild game two, 8-6

NEWARK, NJ - August 28, 2006 - The Newark Bears fell to the Camden Riversharks 8-6 in game two of the doubleheader Monday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
After Camden took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, Bears right-fielder Will Pennyfeather followed a Matt Brunson single and a Jonathan Thomas walk with a three-run home run, his tenth of the season, to put the Bears ahead 3-2 at the end of the first inning.
Camden came back with three runs in the top of the second inning with a three-run home run by third baseman Denny Abreu, his 12th of the season, as second in the doubleheader. The Bears tied the game at five in the bottom of the second when catcher Victor Valencia and center-fielder Anthony Sanders scored on a throwing error by Abreu.
Camden took a 6-5 lead when center-fielder Dwight Maness scored on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter John Pachot, and it remained until the top of the seventh when Abreu hit an RBI single, and Maness drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to go ahead 8-5.
Bears left fielder Jonathan Thomas ripped an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the lead to 8-6, however Chris Fussell shut the door on the Bears for his 18th save of the season.
For the Bears Thomas finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, Pennyfeather ended the game 2-for-4 with a three-run home run, and a double, and Sanders went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Abreu led the Riversharks with two hits and five RBI.
Bears starter Mike Cosgrove (0-3) took the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings, while Mark Ion (3-1) earned the win pitching two scoreless innings allowing one hit.
The Bears begin a six-game road trip Tuesday when they play game one of the three game set with the Long Island Ducks. Carlos Mirabal (4-3) takes the mound for Newark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
