Erie Explosion News Release

August 5, 2008 (Erie, PA) - The Erie RiverRats of the AIFA today announced that Head Coach Shawn Liotta has resigned to take a similar position with the expansion Wheeling Wildcats of the CIFL.

"I'm sad to see Shawn go, although we always knew this day would eventually come. At this level of professional football, turnover among head coaches is not unusual. Looking at the league's coaches at the end of this just-concluded season, I believe Coach Liotta was one of just four who had led the same team for two full seasons. In several conversations, Shawn expressed his desire to work closer to his home and family in Pittsburgh. While I don't agree with this move to a geographic area and league that gets little to no exposure, I certainly can appreciate his motivation.

"Coach Liotta did a great job building our team from scratch as an expansion franchise, and leading us to the playoffs in both his seasons. He has one of the most innovative football minds around, and I anticipate seeing him on an AFL staff someday. I'll always be one of his biggest fans." commented Erie RiverRats President and CEO Jeff Hauser.

The search process for a new Head Coach has already begun, and the organization anticipates interviewing candidates in the next several weeks, with the goal of announcing a hire before the end of September, if not sooner.

Hauser said "We've started to put together a list of candidates, and we invite coaches with the requisite background and experience to e-mail us if interested. Our target candidates would be bright individuals with coaching experience in the indoor football game, a solid network of pro and college-level contacts, and head coaching experience at any level, with preference given to individuals in driving distance of the Erie area."
