Peoria Rivermen News Release
PEORIA, Ill. (August 11, 2009) - Peoria Rivermen General Manager Kevin McDonald announced that the St. Louis Blues have hired Drake Berehowsky as assistant coach of the Rivermen. Berehowsky comes to Peoria after having served as an assistant coach with the Barrie Colts (OHL) for two seasons.
He fills the role vacated by Brent Thompson, who left last month to become the head coach of the Alaska Aces (ECHL).
Berehowsky, 37, has 549 regular season games of NHL experience with Toronto, Pittsburgh, Edmonton, Nashville, Vancouver and Phoenix and in total played 831 games as part of a 16-year professional career. His has spent time in the American Hockey League with Carolina, Hamilton, Springfield and San Antonio.
"Drake has the exact background, fits what we were looking for," McDonald said. "He's played in the NHL and AHL, been in coaching a couple seasons, has been working toward developing prospects who are 18, 19, 20 years old. We wanted someone who had NHL experience, could handle the assistant coaching tasks and can help develop young players. He was that guy."
A former first-round pick, 10th overall by Toronto in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Berehowsky will work with Peoria's defense unit and take on some of the club's special teams responsibilities. He will assemble video for pre-scouting as well as handle some player meetings.
A native of Toronto, he and his wife Lori have five children: Dylan, Duke, Daniel, Dawson and Dalton.
