McDonald functions as an integral member of the St. Louis Blues organization. In his role as the general manager of hockey operations of the Peoria Rivermen he is responsible for facilitating the development of Blues prospects into players who are capable of playing in the National Hockey League (NHL) with Peoria's parent club. As the director of professional scouting of the St. Louis Blues, McDonald oversees the Blues' professional scouting department to ensure that the organization maintains a detailed profile of every player in both the NHL and the American Hockey League, as well as a familiarity of the best players in other professional hockey leagues. He also works closely with Blues in coordinating the transfer of players between the Blues and the Rivermen and in acquiring professional hockey players.
The 2008-09 season is McDonald's 21st in the NHL. He began his career in professional hockey in 1988 as a member of the communications department of the New York Rangers, one of the NHL's "original six" franchises. McDonald served in a variety of capacities in that department, including director of communications. Following the 1993-94 season, when the Rangers won the Stanley Cup, he moved into the Rangers' hockey operations department and worked as an assistant to Rangers General Manager Neil Smith during the lockout-shortened 1994-95 season. From 1995 to 2001, McDonald served as a professional scout for the Rangers, traveling throughout North America and Europe to evaluate professional hockey players.
McDonald joined the Blues organization prior to the 2001-02 Season, when his former boss with the Rangers Larry Pleau hired him as a professional scout for the Blues. McDonald scouted professional talent for the Blues for two seasons before the organization promoted him to director of professional scouting in 2003. Then in June 2005, he was given the added responsibilities of being the general manager of hockey operations of the Rivermen.
A product of Lawrence, Massachusetts, McDonald holds a master's degree in sports management from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Alabama, and a bachelor's degree in communications from Boston College. He resides in North Andover, Massachusetts, where he lives with his wife Lauren, his two children Sean (7) and Kayleigh (6), and his three step-children Joseph (18), Jenna (17), and Daniel (11).
