RiverKings sign goalie

June 6, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN --- Memphis RiverKings Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin McClelland announced today that the Central Hockey League team has signed goalie Larry Sterling for the 2006-2007 season. Sterling spent the past two seasons, his first two as a professional, with the Fort Worth Brahmas.

In his two seasons with the Brahmas, the Lake Orion, MI native had a record of 24-42-5 with a 3.17 goals against average and a .902 save percentage. He also had a pair of shutouts for a team that finished last in the Northeast Division each of the past two seasons and had a combined record of 43-67-14.

"I haven't had much team success my first two years," Sterling said. "So, I am looking forward to going to a team that is headed in the right direction. I liked what I heard from Coach McClelland about the team he is putting together."

The 6-2, 180 pound Sterling has gotten off to good starts in each of his two seasons in Fort Worth. In 2004-2005, he was 5-2-1 with a 2.98 GAA and a .899 save percentage in his first nine appearances. Last season, he started 6-1-0, including one shutout, with a 1.84 GAA and a .945 save percentage.

"It's hard to put a finger on what happened with the team wins and losses wise after our good start last season," Sterling said. "We had a very young team and I think that caught up with us. I think the situation here with the RiverKings is going to be a good for one me. It's a chance for a fresh start."

Overall in 2005-2006, Sterling was 16-28-3 with a 3.43 GAA, a .901 save percentage and one shutout in 49 appearances. His number of games played ranked third in the CHL. In his rookie season of 2004-2005, he finished 8-14-2 with a 2.69 GAA, a .905 save percentage and one shutout in 27 appearances.

Following the 2004-2005 season, Sterling had a brief call-up to the AHL with the Houston Aeros, but did not play.

Prior to turning pro, the 23 year-old played junior hockey with Plymouth of the OHL, Tri City of the USHL as well as Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Detroit of the NAHL. His best season of junior hockey came with Detroit Compuware in 2002-2003; going 38-11-5 with a 2.31 GAA and a .937 save percentage in 54 games.

Sterling is the fourth player to be signed by the RiverKings for this upcoming season. He joins defensemen Derek Landmesser and Bobby Gates and center Travis Banga.
