Mississippi RiverKings News Release
(Southaven, MS) --- Question: what happens four times a year, involves environmental conservation, cooking out, and hockey fans? Answer: the RiverKings hockey team quarter -annual "Adopt-A-Highway" cleanup of U.S. Highway 51 in Southaven.
The next highway cleanup event is planned for this Saturday morning, May 2nd.
Four years ago, the RiverKings decided to sponsor the section of Highway 51 spanning from Church Road to Starlanding Road through the Mississippi Department of Transportation's "Adopt-A-Highway" program.
"We go out as a staff four times a year to pick up trash from the roadside," Director of Business Operations Dave "Ab" Mattice said. "We always invite our fans to join us, and then we host a cook-out afterward.
Mattice continued, It's a win-win-win situation: we help preserve ground-water quality and beautify the area, we encourage fans, families and staff in responsible environmental practices, and it gives us the opportunity to enjoy each other's fellowship. It's a fun, satisfying day all around."
After the highway cleanup, Mattice says he always hosts a cook-out on behalf of the team at his home or a local park, depending on the level of response.
"It's nothing fancy, just hot dogs, hamburgers and bring-your-own-beverage type of thing, but it's a always a good time," Mattice said.
The involvement of the DeSoto County community in this worthwhile event is always appreciated. To take part, please let the RiverKings front office know by 5 PM, May 1st. Call 662-342-1755.
The Mississippi RiverKings are supported by their community partners, season ticket holders, fans, and by program-related investments of the Maddox Foundation, an independent private foundation based in Hernando, Miss., to lessen the burden of the DeSoto County government by increasing the viability of the DeSoto Civic Center and promoting the long-term economic development of the community. The Foundation now uses the team in a variety of programs that increase investments in area charities and their causes.
