Mississippi RiverKings News Release

TUNICA, MS --- The Mississippi RiverKings recently helped sponsor and participated in The Baddour Center's tenth annual "Miracle Drive Golf Tournament" on Friday, May 27 at The Links at Cottonwood Golf Course in Tunica, Mississippi. Tournament organizer and Baddour Center Development Associate Jenny Schultz was thrilled with how this year's event turned out.

"I felt the tournament could not have gone any better," she said. "We are so thankful for everyone who was able to come out and support The Center."

Schultz and other tournament organizers currently estimate the event raised $60,000. Thirty-four golf foursomes took to the fairways, and tournament sponsors, including FedEx, Harrah's, The Links at Cottonwood Golf Course, H.W. Durham Foundation and American Snuff Company, helped raise these funds for The Baddour Center and its residents.

"Our sponsors are incredibly generous," Schultz said. "They are a blessing to our ministry and to the residents that we serve."

Located in Senatobia, Mississippi, The Baddour Center is a residential center that cares for almost 200 adults with intellectual disabilities from 24 states. The Baddour Center strives to give its residents the opportunity to live full, enriched lives and reach their full potential.

One way of doing this is through its vocational program, providing job skills and training to residents, many of whom work at a job site on The Baddour Center campus.

"Just like you and I like to have a job, our residents do too," said Cassie Smith, Baddour Center Public Relations Coordinator.

On the center's 120-acre campus sits the Baddour Custom Packaging job site for residents, while others work at The Baddour Center's gardening gift shop, or as part of the campus grounds crew.

Schultz said the money raised at this year's golf tournament also allows residents to take part in fun activities like book clubs and the arts.

The Baddour Center's drama team, The Wonder Players, are currently rehearsing for their upcoming show "A Night on Broadway," which runs June 23-26 at the Buckman Performing Arts Auditorium on The Baddour Campus.

Residents can also participate in athletics, including golf. "These donations make it possible for them to learn and love the game of golf through Baddour's intra-mural sports programs and activities," Schultz said.

The Baddour Center is not a short-term camp or lodging facility, but the residents' home, which Schultz said is why fundraisers like the golf tournament are so important.

"Fundraisers like the golf tournament ensure that the programs and services that The Center provides will continue to enrich residents' lives throughout the year," she said.

Baddour Center employees like Smith daily see residents' lives impacted and changed through The Center's programs and activities, even surpassing the potential others assumed they may never reach.

"Every day there is someone at The Baddour Center who accomplishes a goal, overcomes a fear or demonstrates talents that society assumed them not to have because of their disability," Smith said.

This fall The Baddour Center will host its 32nd Annual Silent Auction and Fashion Show. The event is scheduled to take place Monday, September 19 at the Hilton Hotel in Memphis, Tenn.
