RiverKings fall flat as Tarantulas cruise to 4-1 win
February 17, 2005 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN---The Memphis RiverKings had hoped for a better start to the home stretch of season than what happened on the ice Thursday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. The game with the Topeka Tarantulas was the start of a string of eight consecutive home games with 11 of the last 14 overall on home ice. But it was the Tarantulas that made themselves feel at home with a comfy 4-1 win.
Dallas Flaman scored twice and Dwayne Bateman made 35 saves to help the Tarantulas end an eight game road winless streak and improve to 2-3 versus the âKings this season. Olivier Maltais scored his first Tarantula goal in the first after Flaman tallied the first goal of the game to make it 2-0 after one. Maltais was acquired in a trade with Tulsa on January 19.
Scott English scored the only goal for Memphis as they dropped their second straight and missed on a chance to gain ground in the playoff hunt. English's goal, his fourth of the season, made it 2-1 at 3:50 of the third, but that would be it for the Memphis offense. Topeka put it away with a Tab Lardner goal at 12:00 followed by a Flaman empty netter to seal the deal at 4-1.
Bateman was the story through much of the game as he came up with several circus saves to deny some high-quality RiverKings' chances. David Lemanowicz made 27 saves to take the loss and drop to 12-13-0 on the season.
Prior to the game, Memphis activated defenseman Ryan Rome off the I.R. list and waived defenseman Drew Terry.
The RiverKings continue the home-stand with the C.H.L. leading Colorado Eagles at the D.C.C. for games tomorrow night and Saturday night. Tomorrow night is Loma Ladies Night with the first 1,500 ladies receiving free Loma Hair Care Products. Then on Saturday night, it's a Chambliss Properties/Habitat for Humanity RiverKings Rally Towel to the first 1,500 fans through the doors. Both games start at 7:05.
