Memphis Xplorers News Release
Southaven, MS - Maddox Hockey, Inc., Maddox Football, Inc., and Trey Medlock announced today that Mr. Medlock is resigning as General Manager and Governor of the Memphis RiverKings hockey franchise and as General Manager of the Memphis Xplorers af2 arena football franchise. Maddox Hockey is owner/operator of the RiverKings and Maddox Football is owner/operator of the Xplorers.
Mr. Medlock's decision is based on his desire to work in a strictly for-profit business environment, as opposed to the community-based development model now being used by the franchises. "I come from a purely business background," said Mr. Medlock. "While I understand the desire of the Maddox Foundation to create true community assets when it formed these companies, doing so requires a philosophy and manner of work that is contrary to my training and experience."
Maddox Foundation, a private charitable foundation based in Hernando, MS, formed Maddox Hockey and Maddox Football in 2001 to ensure that the sports teams remained in the Desoto Civic Center. "Our aim has always been to develop the teams as community assets," said Robin Costa, President of the Foundation and the franchises. "The teams are vital to Desoto County's long-term economic growth, and we continue to support efforts that broaden their impacts in the community."
Ms. Costa thanked Mr. Medlock for both his work, and for his honesty in reaching this decision. "Mr. Medlock has worked very hard since coming to Desoto County to build the viability of the teams," said Costa, "and has had some success in that regard. We wish him the best of luck as he continues his business career." Mr. Medlock was hired in May of last year. It was during his tenure that the Xplorers claimed last year's af2 league championship.
According to Ms. Costa, no decision has been made concerning a replacement for Mr. Medlock. "We are getting close to the end of the hockey season, and nearing the start of the Xplorers' football season," said Costa. "An interim General Manager may be named soon to coordinate our activities. We want time to explore all available options."
