Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release
Washington, PA - The Riverhounds FC battled Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew to a 0-0 tie Wednesday night at Falconi Field in front of 3,180 fans. Neither team managed to score a goal, but the score was no reflection of the solid play by both teams.
The Riverhounds had an early chance in the fifth minute when they were awarded a free kick, but the kick soared high off the crossbar. The Crew came back with a solid chance of their own when in the 37th minute when Wolyniec hit a header that was deflected off of the crossbar. The game was played from one side of the field to the next as both teams applied a great deal of pressure in the offensive end. Individual play was a high-point for both teams as players worked tirelessly to contribute to their team. In the 45th minute, the Hounds' Greg Victor broke away from his defender using his speed and got a hold of a shot that ended up just wide.
Both teams looked pressed for a goal early on in the second half. In the 48th minute Anthony Calvano stepped up to win a ball in the midfield and carried the ball until he hit a shot from outside the eighteen, but Crew GK Gaudette made the save. The Crew's leading goal scorer on the year, Edson Buddle, created a good chance for himself in the 57th minute. Buddle managed to turn off his defender and then fired a shot that just missed the goal. Frustration was evident on the part of both teams as the game was still tied at 0-0 late in the second half. A Riverhounds' foul turned into a bench-emptying scuffle. Three ejections were handed out between the two teams. For the remaining 24 minutes of the match the Riverhounds played a man down. Despite playing a man down to a Major League Soccer team, the Hounds locked down on their defense and held the Crew scoreless. The exhibition game ended in a 0-0 tie, but undoubtedly gave both teams valuable experience for their remaining matches on the year.
The HOUNDS will be on the road for the last game of the season. The Riverhounds will face off against Harrisburg on August 13th.
