RiverHawks win ugly game over Rollers

Quad City Riverhawks News Release
Davenport, IA. The ABA Quad City RiverHawks set a franchise record for points, tied a franchise record for turnovers and must have approached a world record for free throws attempted in an ugly 117-112 win over the Hammond Rollers on Saturday night at Marycrest Activities Center. "We couldn't get into much of a rhythm," Riverhawks coach Jim Condill said. "We'd get the ball inbounds and all they could do to stop us was foul. And then we turned the ball over so darn much."
Quad Cities (3-2) made 50 of 59 free throws, 26 of 29 in the fourth quarter as the Rollers (201) rallied within three late in the game. The 40 turnovers matched the Riverhawks total from an opening night loss to the Minnesota Ripknees. Lonnie Randolph scored 30 points knocking down 15 of 17 from the line and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Riverhawks.
SirValiant Brown added 15, Glen Worley contributed 10 points and 10 boards. Forward Corey Minnifield, who was signed Friday, scored 17 in his debut. The Rollers pulled within 102-99 with 3:50 left in the game before the Riverhawks had made a field goal in the fourth quarter. Quad Cities made only three shots from the field in the quarter, layups from Brown and Worley and a dunk from Anthony Davis, but their frequent trips to the line were more than enough. The 14 turnovers they committed kept it close down the stretch.
Hammond, in fact, had a chance to tie with an ABA Special 4 point shot with less than 20 seconds remaining, but Brown sealed the win by making 5 of 6 from the line in the final seconds. "We sure didn't do very smart things in the fourth quarter," Condrill said. "We had the game put away, and we started making passes we shouldn't try to make. We just didn't play smart." Derik Hollyfield led Hammond with 19 points.
