Johnstown RiverHawks News Release
STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - Using a pair of defensive touchdowns in the second half, the Johnstown Riverhawks opened their 2006 season with a 21-14 win over the Steubenville Stampede on Saturday night at St. John Arena.
The Riverhawks (1-0) used a fumble return by defensive lineman Densville Saunders in the third quarter and a interception return by Dominique Morris in the fourth to overcome a 14-3 deficit late in the first. Johnstown also had three field goals from Jason Cherry from 38, 36 and 20 yards to bolster the offense.
Steubenville (0-2) opened its lead in the first on a 19-yard touchdown pass to receiver Thunder Collins and a 3-yard run from Wes Beschorner, who connected with Collins on the earlier score.
After that, the Riverhawks controlled the clock on offense and harassed Beschorner into overthrows, and three interceptions in the final 49 minutes.
Carlos Campbell, Morris and Derrell Poland each came down with interceptions for Johnstown, which also sacked Beschorner five times in the contest with David Pisanick and Amos Wilson creating chaos in the Steubenville backfield.
Wilson's sack and forced fumble opened the door for Saunders' to scoop up the loose ball and race in untouched to pull the Riverhawks within two points early in the third.
Johnstown took a 15-14 lead early in the fourth on Cherry's third field goal, a 20-yarder and then sealed the win late in the frame on Morris' interception and barrell-roll into the end zone.
Johnstown's next game will take place on March 13 at Syracuse, a 7 p.m. kickoff against the Soldiers.
