Cincinnati Riverhawks News Release
Cincinnati, OH (May 13, 2002) The Cincinnati Riverhawks strengthened their hold on first place in the Central Division with a win over the Portland Timbers on Saturday night.
Although out-shot 19 to 13, the Hawks failed to convert on three break-aways and hit the crossbar on another shot. Timber goalkeeper, Matt Napoleon kept Portland in the game with his outstanding play. Shawn Rockey was the lone scorer in the game. Rockey scored in the first half as Ryan Lucas back-heeled a no-look pass to Rockey tearing down the right side and he beat his man to place a far post shot past Napoleon. Although, in the second half, the Timbers had numerous offensive attacks, the Riverhawks' defense kept them from out of the goal. Riverhawks' goalkeeper, Chris Wanamaker had an outstanding game with several great saves including a point-blank header late in the contest. Fred DeGand, Ben Fisher and Joe Mercik anchored the defense to preserve the shutout.
The battle for first place continues this Saturday night when the Riverhawks take on the second place, Minnesota Thunder at 7:30 p.m.
