RiverHawks Swept

July 7, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Rockford RiverHawks News Release

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - Ron Borquin beat the Rockford RiverHawks, even when he didn't swing.

Borquin singled in the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on Wednesday as Schaumburg beat Rockford, 5-2, in the first of two games at Alexian Field. In the nightcap, Borquin walked with the bases loaded in the 11th to give the Flyers a 4-3 win.

Borquin drove in the deciding run in all three games of the last-place Flyers' sweep of the RiverHawks. On Monday, he hit a tie-breaking home run in Schaumburg's 4-3 victory. Tuesday's game was suspended because of inclement weather with no score after 1 innings - Wednesday's early game was its completion.

Joe Nowicki and Richard Mercado homered for Schaumburg in the second inning. In the fourth, Rockford rallied for a 2-2 tie when Ian Church tripled in a run and scored on an Evan McArthur sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Flyers rallied for three runs off reliever Brandon Todd. Todd (0-4) walked the first two hitters and an errant pickoff attempt by catcher Travis Scott advanced both. Borquin hit a two-run single to right field. He scored on a two-out double by Nowicki.

Rockford did not have a base hit after the fifth inning. Reliever Matt Elliott (3-1) struck out four and retired all 10 batters he faced for the win. Josh Giles walked McArthur with two outs in the ninth inning, but struck out the other three hitters for his fourth save.

In the regularly scheduled game, Rockford loaded the bases with one out. Patrick O'Sullivan singled in a run and Church walked to force in another run. Though the RiverHawks rallied from a 3-2 deficit on Kevin House's RBI single in the seventh to force extra innings, the Rockford offense again sputtered late. Three Schaumburg relievers combined to retire the last 14 RiverHawks in order. Cody Evans (2-3) pitched the 11th inning for the win.

With one out in the bottom of the 11th, Rockford reliever David Wagner gave up a single to Ruddy Yan and a ground-rule double to Josh Burrus. Wagner (0-1) intentionally walked Josh Burrus, then Borquin drew the walkoff walk.

The RiverHawks are off on Thursday. They open their last series of the first half, a three-game trip to Lake County, at 4:45 p.m. Friday. No games in that series are scheduled to be broadcast.

The RiverHawks' next home game won't be until after the All Star break. They host the Lake County Fielders at 7:05 p.m. Thursday, July 15. The annual Muscular Dystrophy Association jersey auction, featuring Jacksonville Jaguars safety and Byron native Sean Considine, will immediately follow the game. It's also Miller Lite/2nd Cousin's Dollar Beer Night. The 2nd annual Guns vs. Hoses charity softball game is scheduled for 2-5 p.m. It's also Rockford Chamber Night, Byron Community Night and Jimmy Buffet Night.
