RiverHawks Stop Streaking Ice Gators

Augusta RiverHawks News Release

The Augusta RiverHawks held on tight to a narrow one-goal victory Saturday night against the Louisiana Ice Gators. Forward Jim Gehring, fresh off of an overtime winning goal Friday night, led the way offensively with a goal and an assist. RiverHawks' goaltender Peter Skoggard, playing in his second game with the team since being signed earlier this week, made 28 saves for his second victory.

The win preserves sole-possession of second place in the Southern Professional Hockey League for the RiverHawks. It also snapped the Ice Gators' four-game winning streak.

The RiverHawks got off to a great start with three quick goals in the first period. Egor Mironov, Ryan Olidis, and Jim Gehring all scored to give the RiverHawks a huge lead early. However some sloppy play in the second half of the first period led to Ice Gators goals by Denis Sicard and Chris Tozzo to bring them within a single goal.

The two teams exchanged scoring chances in the second period with both goaltenders coming up large for their teams. However, the RiverHawks were finally able to break through late in the second while on the power play as Travis Dunstall found a loose puck beside the Ice Gators' net and hammered it in.

The Ice Gators would narrow the lead back to one goal when Beau McLaughlin fired a shot from the blue line that found its way through Skoggard's legs. However, a late surge would not be enough as the RiverHawks were able to shut the door and let time run out.

The RiverHawks are back in action at the James Brown Arena Friday, March 18th as they face the Knoxville Ice Bears. The puck drops at 7:30pm. Tickets are available at the James Brown Arena Box Office, by calling 1-877-4AUGTIX, or by visiting www.georgialinatix.com.
