Johnstown RiverHawks News Release
JOHNSTOWN, PA - On Friday night, Head Coach Steven G. Folmar wanted to see his defense play better than they did against the Canton Legends, little did he know that would be sacrificed at the hands of the offense. The Riverhawk offense turned the ball over three times and they lost another fumble on special teams as the Huntington Heros picked up a 35 - 24 win in Johnstown.
The Riverhawks (0-2) stumbled early and repeated mistakes kept the Hawks from ever posing a serious threat in the contest. After the Heros (1-1) scored to open the game the Riverhawks stormed back with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Weylon Davis to receiver Quenteen Robinson in the back of the endzone. After another Heros' score Davis was stripped by a Huntington defender and the fumble was returned for a touchdown to make the score 19-6. Johnstown Fullback Michael Feeney would punch the ball in from one yard out, a full nine plays later to make the score 19-13. After a Riverhawk fumble and interception the Hawks would go into the half down 28-13.
The second half didn't get any better for Johnstown as all-league receiver Robinson was decked on the return of the opening kickoff and lost the ball. The defense held but the offense continued to struggle with the only scoring in the third period being a 38-yard field goal by Johnstown kicker Jason Cherry. Huntington added the third rushing touchdown of the night by fullback Donte Newsome before Riverhawks back-up quarterback Jarrod Highberger made a spectacular dive into the end some, where he was knocked head over heels, with just a minute remaining for the final tally. "When you are only giving up 35 points you had better be winning in this league," said Folmar. "We have to face facts right now that we are not a very good football team. Our staff has got to find a way to get this ship righted. Some hard decisions are going to have to be made these next two weeks and there are going to be some unhappy people."
The Johnstown Riverhawks, a proud member of the American Indoor Football Association, now have a bye week before continuing action Friday, February 23rd against the Danville Demolition in Danville, Illinois.
