RiverHawks Knock off Ice Bears

March 8, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release

The more intense the game, the more the leaders need to step up for their team. Such was the case Thursday night in Knoxville, TN as Augusta RiverHawks' Captain Matt Auffrey scored the game winning goal with less than a minute left in the overtime period to give his team the 3-2 victory.

Auffrey figured in each of the RiverHawks' goals on the night, as he picked up a pair of assists on Augusta's previous markers.

The win was the RiverHawks' second straight against the Ice Bears after losing fight-straight games against their second-place rivals. The victory gives the RiverHawks an eight-point cushion on the Ice Bears in the race for first place in the SPHL regular season standings.

The Ice Bears grabbed the early lead by scoring the only goal in the first period. Forward Tyler Fletcher beat RiverHawks' goaltender Peter Skoggard while on the penalty kill, giving his team a 1-0 lead.

The night's two goaltenders shut the door in the second period as neither team managed to log a goal. Skoggard finished the night with 32 saves on his way to his 11th of the season. For the Ice Bears, goaltender Kyle Rank made 39 saves.

Early in the third period the RiverHawks would tie the game as defenseman John Kearns would score his first of the season less than four minutes into the frame. The score would stay knotted at one until RiverHawks defenseman Drew Baker gave his team their first lead of the game with less than four minutes remaining. However, with just over a minute left in the game SPHL leading scorer Kevin Swider would even the game at two with his 28th of the season, setting the stage for Auffrey's heroics in overtime.

For Auffrey, the three point effort places him into fourth place in the SPHL in points scored. The goal snaps a five-game goal-less drought, and places him eight in the league in goals scored. He now had back-to-back three-point games against the Ice Bears.

The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Friday, March 9th as they face the Knoxville Ice Bears. The puck drops at 7:35pm .Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office.
