RiverHawks Hand Louisiana Their First Loss

Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Augusta RiverHawks needed a bounce-back performance Thursday night on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena and they got it, defeating the previously unbeaten Louisiana Ice Gators 4-3. The win moves the RiverHawks' record to two wins and one loss as they prepare for the second half of the back-to-back matchup against the Ice Gators Friday night.
The win comes on the heels of a disappointing performance last Saturday when the RiverHawks were handed a drubbing at the hands of the Huntsville Havoc.
RiverHawks' goaltender Peter Skoggard made 24 saves for his second win of the season. The victory extended his regular season winning streak to ten games dating back to the 2010-11 season.
While the two periods were largely dominated by the RiverHawks it was the Ice Gators who jumped out to the early lead. Forward Jason Hill found a loose puck at the side of the goal and sent a sneaky backhander between Skoggard's skate and the post.
It would only take two minutes for the RiverHawks to respond and restore the tie. Travis Dunstall started off a pretty power play goal with a seeing-eye pass to defenseman Ed Snetsinger. Snetsinger found Chris Doyle alone at the side of the net who fired a one-timer past Ice Gators' goaltender Mike Brown.
The game would remain tied until six minutes into the second period. RiverHawks defenseman Drew Baker stepped out of the penalty box and hammered a slap shot past Brown with two Ice Gators defensemen smothering him. Baker's first of the season seemed to propel the RiverHawks as they would score two more before the end of the frame. Three minutes later Doyle would score his second power play goal of the game during a scramble at the side of the Gators' net, and two minutes after that Jesse Echternach would receive a feed from Baker and fire the puck just under the crossbar and into the goal.
It looked like it was turning into a RiverHawks' rout, but back-to-back penalties to the home team led to a 5-on-3 power play to start the third period of which the Ice Gators took advantage. Brayden Metz finished off a furious scramble in front of the RiverHawks' goal to make the score 4-2. Mid-way through the period Ice Gators' forward August Aiken would score his first of the season to narrow the lead to just a goal. However, despite a desperate finish Skoggard and the RiverHawks would shut the door for the remainder of the period and skate away with the 4-3 victory.
The two teams are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration at the James Brown Arena Friday, October 28th. The puck drops at 7:35pm. Fans are encouraged to order tickets in advance by calling the RiverHawks' front office at 706 993 2645.
