RiverHawks Defeat Surge for Third Straight Game
December 2, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Augusta RiverHawks continued their dominance over the defending Southern Professional Hockey League Champions with a 5-2 win over the Mississippi Surge Friday night at the James Brown Arena. RiverHawks' forward Chris Doyle continued his incredible run of late, scoring two goals in the third period including the game winner and adding an assist to lead his team over Mississippi. The three-point night gives him 26 on the season, good for second in the SPHL in scoring, just five points back of the leader.
The RiverHawks were backstopped by a strong goaltending performance from BJ O'Brien. O'Brien made 26 saves en route to his third win of the season.
The win bumps the RiverHawks' record to 12 wins compared to just three losses and one overtime loss. Their 25 points in the standings place them five up on the second-place Knoxville Ice Bears, who have two games in-hand on Augusta.
The game did not start as promising for the home team as the Surge jumped out to an early lead. Former RiverHawks' forward Chris Campanale converted a nifty Adam Stuart pass and flipped it over the shoulder of BJ O'Brien to make the score 1-0.
The score stayed that way until 12-minutes into the second period when the RiverHawks broke through. Branden Kosolofsky used persistent effort on the fore-check to create a turnover and slid a pass out front to Aaron McGill. McGill made no mistake, firing a shot just inside the far post to tie the game. The RiverHawks then were able to take the lead. With just under a minute and a half remaining in the second period, Chris Doyle feathered a nice pass over to linemate Dustin Cloutier who fired it past Surge goaltender Nick Eno.
Things looked good to start the third period for the Surge as they tied the game just over eight minutes in on a goal from Rob Campbell on the power play. However, it was the Chris Doyle-show from there on, as he would score his two goals of the night to give the RiverHawks the lead. Captain Matt Auffrey would ice the game for Augusta with an empty net goal in the final minute of play.
The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Thursday, December 8th, as they play the Huntsville Havoc. It is Pucks, Bucks, and Brews Night, featuring dollar beers. The puck drops at 7:35pm. Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office. Additional information on the Team, tickets, and schedule are available on the RiverHawks' home on the web, www.augustariverhawks.com or by calling 706-993-2645.
