RiverHawks Defeat First-Place Surge in Olthuis' 40-Save Shut Out

It took specialty team effectiveness and a special performance in goal for the Augusta RiverHawks to knock off the first-place Mississippi Surge 2-0 Thursday night in Biloxi. RiverHawks' goaltender Jon Olthuis was the star making 40 saves for his second shut out of the season.

The win moves the RiverHawks into sole possession of second place, just four points back of the Surge in the race for the best regular season record.

All the scored was done in the second, started by RiverHawks' forward Jim Gehring. Gehring has hit his stride offensively of late with three goals and four points in his past four games. The power play goal was set up by his line mates Ryan Olidis and Neil Graham.

The RiverHawks would take a two-goal lead with less than two minutes remaining in the period. While shorthanded Captain Matt Auffrey forced a Surge turnover and scored on the subsequent breakaway. The goal pulled Auffrey into third place in the SPHL scoring race, just five points back of the leader.

Dan Earles made 20 stops in net for the Surge but would suffer the loss.

The RiverHawks are back in action at the James Brown Arena Friday, March 18 th as they face the Knoxville Ice Bears. The puck drops at 7:30pm.
