Riverhawks Blast Demolition

February 26, 2007 - American Indoor Football Association (AIFA)
Johnstown RiverHawks News Release

JOHNSTOWN, PA - Losing your star receiver, your starting cornerback and your special team's leader in the first quarter would doom most teams to the losing column. Those teams aren't from Johnstown as the Riverhawks (1-2) played three quarters three players short and still dominated the Danville Demolition (0-2) 39 - 16 in American Indoor Football Association action Friday Night.

Quentin Robinson suffered a sprained knee when he rolled on the poor playing surface in Danville while making a cut half way through the first quarter. That made Head Coach Steven G. Folmar do some creative play calling, and the Riverhawks receiving corps picked up the slack despite a sloppy but spirited performance by quarterback Jarrod Highberger in his first start for Johnstown. Highberger had troubles holding on to the ball all evening but used that and his elusiveness to make some incredible plays to lead Johnstown to victory.

The Hawks and the Demolition Riverhawks traded blows throughout the first half as Danville scored first before the Riverhawks found the end zone twice in a row. Then with the half coming to a close, a great play by cornerback Trent Jones, running down a Demolition receiver from behind, created a fumble that Jones picked up and returned to the ½ yard line. Determined not to waste the turnover, Folmar had Highberger drop to the back of the end zone and lobbed a 35-yard bomb to receiver Terrance Hudson. Two play later, Highberger would scramble out of the pocket, temporarily lose grip on the football, and then made a chest pass that would have made Bill Russell proud, 12-yards for a touchdown to Michael Caputo.

In the second half, it was all defense as the Hawks had two 4-down stands inside their own Red Zone, and Trent Jones would find another interception to help lead the Riverhawks to their first win of the season. Both Robinson and Montgomery are expected to play against Erie this Sunday will the Hawks still await word on the knee injury to special teams stand-out Erik Weaver.

The Johnstown Riverhawks of the American Indoor Football Association will now try to reach the .500 mark this Sunday as they travel to take on the Erie Freeze in Erie, PA. Kickoff is scheduled for 4pm and you can catch all the action on AIFA TV at www.aifatv.com.
