RiverHawks Add Two New Faces to the Fold

August 12, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release

The Augusta RiverHawks Hockey Club has announced that they have signed a pair of forwards for the 2011-12 season. Center Brad Houston and Left Winger Matt Schmermund each signed on with the RiverHawks this week.

Schmermund, 23, is coming off of a strong two-season collegiate career at Ryerson University in Canada. Last season he scored 12 goals and added 12 assists for 24 points in 28 games. The previous year he scored 15 goals and added 14 assists for 29 points in 27 games.

Prior to playing college hockey, the 6'1, 170-pound Schmermund played three seasons in the Western Hockey League split between the Portland Winterhawks and the Kamloops Blazers. He has also spent time in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with the Camrose Kodiaks.

"Matt comes off a great season last year leading his collegiate team in points," said RiverHawks Head Coach Brad Ralph. "Matt had a solid junior career in the WHL and looks to build off his late blooming point production during his transition to the professional game. A solid two-way LW that can skate and make plays at a high level."

Houston, 25, is a Canadian who took a different route to the SPHL than his new teammate. Houston is coming off of a sold four-year college career with the NCAA Division III's Adrian College. Over the course of his four years at Adrian he scored 72 goals and added 80 assists for 152 points in 102 games. The 6'1, 236-pound power forward also posted 246 penalty minutes during his college career.

"Brad comes was a leader at Adrian College and is one of 17 graduating players," said Ralph. "He is a big center that has great hands and hockey sense. Houston put up big points in college and in junior hockey, and his production will be much needed as we fill the roster for the coming season."

The RiverHawks open the Southern Professional Hockey League's season with a home game against the Mississippi Surge in a rematch of the 2010-11 President's Cup Final. The game will be played at the James Brown Arena on Thursday, October 20th at 7:30pm.

Season tickets are on sale for the 2011-12 season and are available through the RiverHawks' front office at 706-993-2645. Information on the team and tickets is available at www.augustariverhawks.com.
