Riverdragons Celebrate Tip-Off of 2004-05 Season This Saturday

COLUMBUS, Ga., November 17—The Columbus Riverdragons will open their 2004-05 National Basketball Development League season this Saturday, November 20th at the Columbus Civic Center with a 6 p.m. tip-off against the Huntsville Flight. The Dragons match-up with Huntsville will be featured in conjunction with the God Bless Fort Benning Day Celebration and youth clinic hosted by the Legends of the Harlem Globetrotters.

The God Bless Fort Benning Day Celebration is scheduled for 12-4 p.m. outside the Civic Center and will feature a live concert performance by national and award-winning singer, Lee Greenwood, and popular local artists, Cornbread. The Celebration is open to the public and is a free event honoring all military personnel and their families. All military personnel will be fed a complimentary meal, with all civilians being fed for a donation.

Those participating in the God Bless Fort Benning are encouraged to attend the Riverdragons game later that day. Active military with proper military ID will receive complimentary admission to the Dragons game at 6 p.m.. Family members of active military with proper ID can purchase tickets for only $7.

The Legends of the Harlem Globetrotters will also highlight Saturday's event. At 4 p.m., the Legends will be hosting a youth basketball clinic inside the Civic Center that is designed to teach young players basketball basics, Harlem Globetrotters' tricks, and basic skills needed to succeed in life away from the court. The cost for the clinic is $10. In addition to the clinic, participants will receive a ticket to the Riverdragons game against Huntsville at six o'clock. To participate in the clinic, stop by the Riverdragons office at 18 East 11th Street in Uptown Columbus, or contact John Washington at (706) 225-1114. Youngsters can also sign up at the Civic Center on the day of the event.

The characters from the Wizard of Oz will also make a special Civic Center appearance during the Dragons game. Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and the Scarecrow will be on hand to meet and greet with fans of all ages.

Tickets for the Riverdagons season opener are now available by calling 1-800-4-NBA-TIX or by logging onto ticketmaster.com. Tickets can also be purchased at the Columbus Civic Center box office and all Ticketmaster outlets, including Publix supermarkets.

The NBDL includes the Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), Florida Flame (Ft. Myers), Huntsville Flight (Ala.), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Columbus Riverdragons (Ga.) and Asheville Altitude (N.C.).

The league offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBA's umbrella. In addition to the 28 players, nine former NBDL coaches and five athletic trainers have been called up since the start of the league's inaugural season in November 2001.

Designed to help grow the sport of basketball both domestically and internationally, the league also offers fun, family entertainment at affordable prices. The NBDL is a source of on-court talent for the NBA's 30 teams and is a diverse human resources pool for the NBA and its teams by training employees in management, operations, public relations, sales and marketing positions.
