Riverdragons and SpongeBob To Host Pep Rally and Visit The Medical Center March 25th

COLUMBUS, Ga., March 15 – The Columbus Riverdragons will host SpongeBob SquarePants at CSG Aviation on the Columbus Airport facilities Thursday, March 25 for a pep rally and field trip with local students. Afterwards, the Riverdragons, along with SpongeBob SquarePants, will visit The Medical Center to meet the children being cared for in the pediatric wing.

Students from Rigdon Road Elementary will arrive at the Columbus Airport at 9:15 AM to tour the CSG Aviation facilities. At 11:00 AM, SpongeBob SquarePants will land to meet and greet the students and participate in a pep rally for the Riverdragons. Afterwards, SpongeBob and the Riverdragons will visit the pediatric ward at The Medical Center at 1:30 PM. All ten Riverdragons players, as well as members of the River Rage dance team and front office personnel, will be on hand for both events.

"SpongeBob SquarePants does not visit Columbus too often, so we want to mark this special occasion by celebrating with the community", said Riverdragons Team President J. Barry McMullin. "Spongebob's visit to the Chattahoochee Valley will continue our goal of providing fun for the community, and his subsequent visit with our great group of players to the pediatric ward of The Medical Center is sure to be a ‘Slam Dunk'".

SpongeBob will also appear at the Riverdragons home game against the Roanoke Dazzle the following night, Friday, March 26 at the Columbus Civic Center. SpongeBob will be on hand to meet, greet and sign autographs for kids of all ages before, during and after the Dragons game against the Dazzle at 7:00 PM. "SpongeBob SquarePants Night with the Riverdragons" is sponsored by Knology, Tobacco Free Action Coalition (TFAC) and Uptown Columbus, Inc..

Launched in 1999 by creator Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants has become the most popular kids show on television, routinely attracting ten million kids viewers (ages two to eleven) per week. The cartoon has also developed a large following among adults, with over five million adult viewers (ages 18 to 49) for each episode on Nickelodeon. The show centers on the title character, a squeaky-voiced sponge who lives inside of a pineapple in the undersea town of Bikini Bottom. An eternal optimist who works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab restaurant, SpongeBob is surrounded by a zany cast of characters, which includes his pet snail Gary, miser Mr. Krabs and nemesis Plankton, who constantly tries to steal the Krusty Krab's secret recipe for Krabby Patties.

The NBDL, the NBA's minor league, includes the Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), Charleston Lowgators (S.C.), Huntsville Flight (Ala.), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Columbus Riverdragons (Ga.) and Asheville Altitude (N.C.).

The league offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBA's umbrella. Twenty-six (26) players have been called up the NBA on 36 separate occasions. Four former NBDL coaches and six referees have also been called up to the NBA since the start of the league's inaugural season in November 2001.

Designed to help grow the sport of basketball both domestically and internationally, the league also offers fun, family entertainment at affordable prices. The NBDL is a source of on-court talent for the NBA's 30 teams and is a diverse human resources pool for the NBA and its teams by training employees in management, operations, public relations, sales and marketing positions.
