River Raiders to Participate in 15th Annual Pumpkinfest and Weigh-Off

Cedar Rapids, IA (October 3, 2003) As seasons change and the leaves change color and fall off the trees, the Cedar Rapids River Raiders are actively involved with the community in and around Cedar Rapids.
This Saturday October 4th the River Raiders will be at the 15th Annual Pumpkinfest and Weigh-off in Anamosa, IA.. The River Raiders staff will be at a booth passing season information from noon until 5p.m. Events scheduled throughout the day including the Ryan Norlin Pumpkin Weigh-off, Pumpkinfest Parade, pumpkin carving exhibits, food and craft booths, pumpkin recipe contest, games, tractor pull and other events for the family to enjoy.
In 1989 the first Ryan Norlin Pumpkin Weigh-Off was held in Anamosa. This competition was started by Tom Norlin, uncle of Ryan, who wished to dedicate this weigh-off to his nephew who had lost his life in a boating accident. Tome had been growing big pumpkins for 30 years of which Ryan had become a part. In 1993, Tom and other area pumpkin growers organized the Mid-West Pumpkin Growers Association, which is affiliated with an international organization, the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth. The goal of the Weigh-Off is to bring a world's record of a 1,200 pound pumpkin to Anamosa.
The River Raiders will start its inaugural 30 game regular season in April of 2004 at the US Cellular Center in downtown Cedar Rapids. The River Raiders are an expansion franchise of the 19 year old United States Basketball League.
