Cedar Rapids River Raiders News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA (March 11, 2004) The River Raiders know what is means to have "HOPS," so it was natural to participate in the St. Matthews School Jump-A-Thon in to raise money for the American Heart Association. The St. Matthews School gym was packed with students and teachers from St. Matthews, as well as volunteer students from Xavier High School and special guests Brandon Horman, a 6'4" freshman basketball player from Mount Mercy College and Cedar Rapids River Raiders front office staff members, General Manager Sean McLaughlin and Assistant Coach Kenyon Murray.

"Jump Rope For Heart" promotes the value of physical activity to elementary school children while showing them they can contribute to their community's welfare. This is a time when children can establish a solid foundation for movement skills. These are also the years when positive learning experiences can help establish a positive attitude and appreciation for participating in regular, daily physical activity for life.

Heart disease ranks as this nation's No. 1 killer; stroke is No. 3 and a leading cause of serious disability. Every year, about 950,000 Americans die from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. That's nearly 40 percent of all deaths. For more information visit www.americanheart.org.
