Cedar Rapids River Kings News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - In the second game of the back-to-back matchup between the River Kings and the Barnstormers, the River Kings fell in a close game, 59-48. Cedar Rapids led the game 48-46, but gave up the games final 13 points.

Kurt Palandech was able to complete 60% (14-23) of his passes for 154 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. He was also able to find the end zone once with his legs on seven rushes for 31 yards.

However, the real running threat was Nate Chavious. He rushed eight times for 65 yards and two touchdowns. Chavious has been spotty during the course of this season, but this was a nice game for him to be able to build on.

In the hands department, Drake White, in back to back games, made his presence known as an end zone threat. He reeled in three catches for an even 50 yards and two touchdowns. Marquel Wade was able to reel in four for 51 yards and no receiving touchdowns, however, he found a way to torch the kickoff team twice for touchdowns. His final linein the returning category was eight returns for 164 yards and two touchdowns. He has been a threat all year as a returner, and he finally was able to find the end zone not just once, but twice.

On defense, Nick Brassell had another good game having seven total tackles. Malik Slater also was all over the field by having eight total tackles with one of those being a sack.

Now, in sunny Arizona, the Strike Force's defense struggled against the high-powered Rattlers offense. They surrendered 91 points, but they were also able to score 58. If the River Kings want to win this game, they are going to need to stop that offense, as it seems the defense had quite a few loose bolts.

For San Diego, their split backfield of QBs (Derrick Bernard: 8-23, 65 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT; Jiha Vercher: 7-11, 89 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT) had some obvious struggles. Bernard only completed about 35% of his passes, although he was able to make three of those completions touchdowns.

The run game was where the Strike Force had slightly more success. George Moreira Jr. turned his 11 touches into 51 yards and two touchdowns. However, 41 of those yards came off one rush. Quarterback Derrick Bernard was able to rush twice for 23 yards and a touchdown, as well.

When it came to receiving the ball was spread pretty evenly. Only running back Moreira Jr. had more than one touchdown. He reeled in two passes for 24 yards and two touchdowns. Other than that Marques Rodgers, David Carter, and Julian Stafford all had one touchdown to their name. Cedar Rapids is going to have to play good defense on all of the receivers if they want to have success defensively against the Strike Force this week.

A name on San Diego's defense that the River Kings will need to keep an eye out for is Omar Cook. He had five total tackles, alongside an interception an three pass breakups. The game kicks off at 7:05 CDT and the River Kings will have a watch party at Jimmy Z's, 112 2nd Street SE in Cedar Rapids. Cedar Rapids will be back at home in the U.S. Cellular Center on Sunday, April 20th.
