New England Riptide News Release
The New England Riptide was back on Martin Softball Field Wednesday July 26, 2006 for the first in a four game series with the Connecticut Brakettes. The Riptide took the game 3-1.
Connecticut's leadoff batter Kelly Kretschman sent a homerun over the centerfield fence in the top of the first giving the Brakettes an early 1-0 lead. Riptide pitcher Jocelyn Forest faced tough opposition from the Brakettes at the plate, but the New England defense was able to prevent a Connecticut rally. After Kretschman?s solo homerun Forest earned her first strikeout of the night against Denise Denis. Lisa Iancin then helped to put the inning away catching a fly ball off the bat of Jessica Merchant and another from Stephanie Best.
Brakettes pitcher Kaci Clark quieted the Riptide at the plate in the bottom of the first, earning consecutive strikeouts against Lindy Winkler and KJ Kelley, but struggled in the second. Lyndsey Angus led off with a hard hit single past shortstop Merchant putting the tying run on base. Designated player Tarrah Beyster hit back to Clark in the circle and was thrown out at first while Angus advanced to second.
A wild pitch sent Angus to third and a Jen Scavone single over the head of second baseman Best sent Angus home tying the score at 1. New England turned an impressive double play in the top of the third shutting down the Connecticut offense. Kretschman was first to the plate getting on base with a single into centerfield. Denis was next to the plate and attempted a bunt in an effort to advance Kretschman. The bunt attempt by Denis was popped up and caught by Angus who was running in. Angus turned around and threw to Iancin at first for the out on Kretschman who was already halfway to second. Jackie Pasquerella caught a fly ball off the bat of Kellie Wilkerson to retire the Connecticut side.
Angus helped to break the tie in the bottom of the fourth giving the Riptide a 2-1 lead. Angus led off with a double, her second hit of the night in two at bats putting the tying run on for New England. Iancin doubled to bring Angus home giving the Riptide a 2-1 advantage over the Brakettes. Pasquerella singled with two outs in the inning advancing Iancin to third, but was caught stealing by Connecticut catcher Germaine Fairchild for out number three.
Beyster increased the Riptide lead in the bottom of the sixth blasting her fourth homerun of the season over the left field fence to put New England on top 3-1.
The Riptide shut down the Brakettes at the plate through the seventh inning, taking the game in a 3-1 victory. Forest earned five strikeouts on her way to her tenth pitching victory of the season.
