New England Riptide News Release
Lowell, Ma -July 17th- Tonight at Martin Softball Field, the friends of the Wiggles, Henry the Octopus, Wags the Dog, and Dorothy the Dinosaur made a very special appearance. Unfortunately for the Riptide so did Angela Tincher. Tincher was on her game tonight and shut out the Riptide by a score of 3-0 in a game that saw a twenty minute rain delay in the sixth. The loss cut the Riptide winning streak at five. Tincher was pitching a good, but not overpowering game for the first five innings. She had given up three hits and walked four. Unfortunately for the Riptide the rain came in the middle of the sixth and Tincher came back stronger than ever. In the sixth Tincher came back and struck out the side and in the seventh, struck out two. Eileen Canney was a hard luck loser for the Riptide allowing six hits and three unearned runs.
The Racers jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first on an unearned run. Jess Merchant was unable to handle Veronica Wootson's ground ball with one out. A single by Kristen Butler and double by Kate Robinson scored the run. It might have been worse had India Chiles not been called out for stepping on the plate when attempting to squeeze home a second run. They scored another unearned run in the fourth this time as a result of a botched pickoff attempt that sailed into right field after Norelle Dickson had led off with a walk. Dickson went to second and scored on a single by Kate Robinson.
The Racers scored another unearned run in the sixth. This time it was a passed ball that led to the run. The Riptide were unable to take advantage of Akron base running mistakes as the Racers were called for leaving early three times. Instead Riptide runners were picked off once and caught stealing twice.
The series concludes on Saturday at Martin Softball Field at 7:05. It is Mizuno night and the first 500 fans receive a special limited edition Jennie Finch poster. The Chicago Bandits come to Martin Softball Field for a four game series next week on Friday the 25th, Saturday the 26th , Sunday the 27th and Monday 28th.
