Rockford Thunder News Release

Rockford, Ill August 7th - Eileen Canney stepped into the circle for the New England Riptide tonight in an attempt to even the series with the Rockford Thunder at two games each. Canney got the job done allowing no earned runs, four hits and striking out ten as the Riptide took the final game 5-1. Canney is now tied with Katie Burkhart for second in strikeouts with 129 only three behind leader Angela Tincher. Serena Settlemeir (2-10) took the loss for the Thunder. Settlemeir pitched well until the seventh when the Riptide put the game away by scoring three runs.

The game started eerily similar to last night with the Riptide scoring two in the top of the first with Jess Merchant singling in Carri Martin and Jackie Pasquerella both of whom singled with no outs. With one out Lyndsey Angus got hit by a pitch to load the bases for Merchant.

The Thunder came back with one of their own, this one unearned in the first. Merchant was unable to handle lead off hitter Erin Evans' ground ball. Amanda Williams sacrificed Evans to second and she scored on a single by Kristen Zaleski.

Both pitchers settled into a groove for the next five innings with neither team scoring or threatening to score. The Riptide broke it open in the seventh. KJ Kelley started with a walk (Lisa Iancin pinch ran) and Shanel Scott hit a line shot for a single. Martin loaded the bases when she beat out her sacrifice bunt attempt and Pasquerella singled to score Iancin and Scott. Cassidy Scoggins came in for Settlemeir and got out of the inning, but not before Lisa Modglin batted in the Riptide's fifth run with a single.

The Riptide travel to Chicago tomorrow to begin a four game series with the Bandits They return home to Martin Softball Field on August 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th to wrap up the regular season against the first place Washington Glory.
