Riptide lose 3-2 in tenth

New England Riptide News Release

Lowell, Ma - Erica Beach and Angela Tincher faced off in a pitcher's duel at Martin Softball Field last night. Beach outpitched Tincher, but wins have been tough to come by for Beach this year as the Riptide fell to the Racers 3-2 in extra innings. Only one of the runs was earned and the third was a result of sloppy defense. Beach struck out 11 and Tincher 15.

The Racers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first courtesy of an unearned run on a throwing error by third baseman Lisa Iancin on a ball hit by lead off hitter Veronica Wootson. She later scored on a double by Kristen Butler.

The Riptide were having trouble with Tincher having struck out four times in the first two innings. They got to her in the fourth to tie the score at one when Shanel Scott beat out an infield hit and proceeded to steal her 15th base of the season. Next up Carri Martin singled Scott home from second.

The Racers scored a run in the sixth to take a 2-1 lead thanks in part to a botched pick off attempt. With Jherica Williams on second with two outs, pinch running for Butler who had walked, the Riptide tried to pick her off. However, Williams made her way to third. Angelena Mexicano pinch hit for India Chiles and hit a hard come backer to Beach who could not quite handle the ball. That was only the second hit Beach gave up on the night.

The lead did not last for the Racers as Lyndsey Angus hit Tincher's first offering over the left field wall to tie the score. Neither team could score any additional runs until the top of the tenth when the Racers pushed across their run. Kim Hamilton took second to begin the international tiebreaker and later scored as a result of a sacrifice and infield out. The Riptide could not push their run across as Shanel Scott was thrown out on an infield ground ball.

The Chicago Bandits come to Martin Softball Field for a four game series next week on Friday the 25th, Saturday the 26th, Sunday the 27th and Monday 28th. Friday is the return of the Six Flags Mascots, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and the Tasmanian Devil.
