San Diego Riptide News Release

SAN DIEGO – Last weekend, the San Diego Riptide unveiled the 2005 Shore Patrol Dance Squad at Dave and Busters in Mission Valley. After an exhausting audition and steep competition, all the girls really wanted to do was have a relaxing night out. Unfortunately for them, the Riptide had bigger plans for their first night together.

"They were all rookies," said Dance Team Director, Erica Hooper. "We wanted to think of a creative way to welcome them to the organization and also give the girls a chance to get to know each other better. A game of props was perfect for their initiation."

Props is a skit featured on ABC's "Whose Line is it Anyway?" in which participants are given a prop and must spontaneously come up with a use for the item that it would not normally be used for. The ladies were given props such as football shoulder pads, football pants, goal markers, and cones. Needless to say, the experience was quite entertaining.

"It was really hard," said Carly Hulse, a member of the new squad. "We've got awesome talent on this dance team, but I guess when it comes to thinking off the cut, we just couldn't figure it out. But at least we made it to the third round."

From imitations of Jared from Subway to a reenactment of the epic battle between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, the ladies displayed their talents. The tough task of judging was given to members of the 2005 Riptide football team which included Rico Curtis, Nathan Buergey, and Ryan Smith.

"The girls seem like bright and energetic group of young ladies," said Buergey. "They were entertaining but it was pretty evident that they didn't know what to do."

The rest of the night, the girls bonded and met several patrons of Dave and Busters on a crowded Saturday night. The Riptide received an email earlier this week from one of those patrons.

"You have a fantastic and personable squad," said Ryan Steck. "I am a football fan and would be interested in attending a riptide game anyway, but after meeting your dance team, I certainly have made it a higher priority this season."

The Riptide Shore Patrol will make their debut during the halftime of the Harlem Globetrotters game on Friday, February 18 at 7:00PM at the San Diego Sports Arena.
