Riptide even series with 6-4 win over Thunder
Rockford, Ill August 5th - Erica Beach took to the circle for the New England Riptide tonight against the Rockford Thunder looking for her second consecutive win. This she was able to accomplish as the Riptide took a 6-2 lead into the seventh and held on to win 6-4. Serena Settlemeir started and took the loss for the Thunder.
After a scoreless first, both teams managed two runs in the second. For the Riptide it was simple. Gina Carbonatto drew the only walk allowed by Settlemeir on the night and KJ Kelley followed with her first home run of the year. The Thunder scored slower but just as effectively. Lindsay Gardner led off with a single and Kristen Zaleski walked. Stephanie Best's bunt sacrifice was the Thunder first out as each runner advanced. A Shanna Diller single and a Stephanie Fischer walk set the stage for the second run on an infield out.
The Riptide went ahead again, for good with three in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. Carbonatto wound up on first after forcing an out at second after Jess Merchant opened the inning with a single. Alex Sutton's single sent Carbonatto to third as Sutton took second. Shanel Scott followed with a single to score both runners. Scott then stole her 18th and 19th league leading base and scored when s throw went into left field. They added one more in the fifth when Jackie Pasquerella doubled and scored on a Lyndsey Angus' single.
Down 6-2 the Thunder would not go easily. With one out Erin Evans and Amanda Williams singled and both scored on Tonya Callahan's double. Jocelyn Forest came on in relief to close the door on the Thunder and pick up her second save of the season.
The Riptide remain on the road all week with two more games against the Thunder and a four game series with the Chicago Bandits. The Riptide return home to Martin Softball Field on August 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th to wrap up the regular season against the first place Washington Glory.
