New England Riptide News Release

Lowell, Ma - June 26 - The New England Riptide took to the field last night to play their second game against the Rockford Thunder. Eileen Canney (5-4) starter for the Riptide entered the game leading the league in strikeouts and was able to hold the Thunder scoreless for the six innings she pitched while striking out seven to increase her total to 60 as the Riptide won for the second straight time 4-0. Erica Beach came on in the seventh to pick up her first save of the year. Cassidy Scoggins (3-4) started for the Thunder and gave up three runs in 2.2 innings.

The Riptide took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Jess Merchant led the inning off with a double to the right field wall and Carmen Paez's single put runners in first and third. Merchant scored on the next play when Carri Martin singled her home. Despite having runners at second and third with only one out, the Riptide were unable to push another run across.

They stretched it to 3-0 with two in the bottom of the third. This time it was a Lyndsey Angus double that scored Shanel Scott who had walked and Gina Carbonatto who had singled. The Riptide scored their fourth run in the sixth. A KJ Kelley single and Alex Sutton double did the damage.

The two teams continue the series on Friday and Saturday at Martin Softball Field at 7:05. On Friday, any fan bringing a violent toy (to be disposed of) may trade it in for a Tangle toy. Saturday features a Riptide Lawn Party featuring the band In the House who will be performing from 5-7. Gates open at 4:15 on Saturday and special picnic food will be available.
