
Force earn walk-off win

Allentown, Pa.- Clare Burnum scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Philadelphia Force a 2-1 win over the Chinese-Taipei National Team. Megan Gibson worked all nine innings to pick up her third straight win to begin her professional career.
The Force (11-2), winners of six in a row, started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Sharonda McDonald was struck out by the Chinese-Taipei pitcher Lin Su Hua but the ball got away from the catcher and McDonald reached first base the passed ball. After McDonald stole second base, Kellie Wilkerson plated her with the first of her three hits on the night.
Chinese-Taipei answered back in the top of the third inning. Lai Meng Ting reached on a one-out fielder's choice. A Tzu Hui single moved her to second. Miao Yi drove in Meng Ting with Chinese-Taipei's only run of the game off of Gibson (3-0).
The game remained tied through the regulation seven innings of play and neither team scored in the eighth.
In the ninth, the Force would end the ballgame. A two-out base knock by Burnum started the winning rally. After Chinese-Taipei changed their pitcher from Chia Yen to Lin Su Hua, Burnum stole second base with McDonald at the plate. McDonald chopped a grounder off of home plate and it was fielded by the Chinese-Taipei third baseman. Her throw to first which would not have gotten the fleet-footed McDonald sailed down the right field line allow Burnum to score the game winning run to send the 495 in attendance home happy.
The first-place Force continue their battle with the Olympic contenders on Friday evening at 7:05 p.m. Tomorrow will be Local Treasure night and Force Softball Olympic night.
