New England Riptide News Release

Lowell, Ma -July 16th- The New England Riptide met the Akron Racers tonight at Martin Softball Field to begin the second half of their away-home series. The Riptide began where they left off behind the five hit pitching of Eileen Canney, who took over the sole possession of most league wins, with nine against five losses. She struck out eight to increase her league lead to 95. The final was 5-2. Angel Shamblin (2-4) took the loss.

The Riptide jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead off Shamblin in the first on Lyndsey Angus's first home run of the year, a shot way over the left field wall, to score Jackie Pasquerella who had bunted her way on earlier.

The Racers got one back in the third to tighten the score to 2-1. Kim Hamilton and Angelena Mexicano led off the inning with back to back singles to left. They were sacrificed to second and third on a sac by Kellie Middleton and came home on a high chopping fielder's choice by Veronica Wootson. The Riptide padded their lead in the fourth by a run to make it 3-1. They did this without the benefit of a hit but were walked twice by Shamblin with one out. Radara McHugh was brought in to relieve Shamblin. McHugh was called for an illegal pitch, allowing Jessica Williams, making her debut for the Riptide pinch running for KJ Kelley, to advance to third and score on an infield out by Pasquerella.

Once again the Racers fought back to pull within one in the fifth. The damage all occurred with two down. Kellie Middleton doubled to left center and came home on a single to left by Wootson. And again the Riptide padded their lead in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-2. Jess Merchant began with a single and later scored on a two out single by Lisa Modglin. The Riptide added one more in the sixth as Angus batted in her third run of the night scoring Shanel Scott who had led off with a walk. Angus was perfect on the night going two for two with a walk and was hit by a pitch.

The series continues on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Martin Softball Field at 7:05. Thursday the Riptide will celebrate St. Patrick's Day in July with special events and drinks. Friday features the Friends of the Wiggles mascots from Six Flags and Saturday is Mizuno night. The first 500 fans will receive a Jennie Finch poster.
