Richmond tops Louisiana with eight seconds left on the clock

Richmond Raiders News Release

It looked like it might be a long night for the Richmond Raiders when the Louisiana Swashbucklers seemed to score easily on the first play from scrimmage. Bucs quarterback, Freddie Harrison, dropped back and heaved a 30 pass to wide-open wide receiver, Jordan Rideaux. But it turned out to be an evenly-matched, hard-fought contest that kept the partisan crowd at the Richmond Coliseum glued to their seats--that is, until Antwon Young threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Antwuan Williams to break a 43-43 tie with just eight seconds left on the clock. Then virtually all 4,389 in attendance erupted in jubilant celebration.

Richmond bounced back quickly after that first score when Young tossed a 20-yard pass to Williams. Kicker T. C. Stevens, who scored 13 points on the evening, put the Raiders ahead 8 to 7 when he placed the ball through the uprights on the ensuing kickoff--his first of two unos.

In all, the lead changed hands seven times over the course of the evening in what for indoor football might be described as a down-in-the-trenches defensive battle. Louisiana made only three of nine third down conversions and Richmond made only three of ten. The only turnover of the evening occurred when a pass by Harrison was intercepted.

Richmond quarterback Antwon Young out of Villanova was the offensive standout of the evening, throwing for four touchdowns and running for two. Bucs quarterback Freddie Harrison was not far behind, passing for five touchdowns. Young completed 17 of 35 for 220 yards while Harrison completed 19 of 33 for 225.

Richmond, now 5-2, remains in second place in the league behind Albany. The Raiders next travel to Alabama to play a Friday evening game against the Nighthawks. The Bucs are at home on Saturday, May 12, against the league-leading Albany Panthers.
