Richmond, VA – The Richmond United Hockey League expansion franchise has signed center Derek Schutz for the 2003-'04 season. Schutz (pronounced ‘shoots') returns to Richmond after spending last season playing at the University of Saskatchewan.

Schutz was named the Most Valuable Player in the Canada West Conference last season. He helped lead the Huskies to a top-five national ranking with 37 points in 33 games. Schutz, a former Calgary Flames draft pick, split one pro season between Richmond and Portland of the AHL prior to playing Canadian University hockey.

"Derek gives us size and the ability to score," said Richmond General Manager Jeff Croop. "He is also a player with a history of winning," Croop added. He also helped lead the Spokane Chiefs to a spot in the Memorial Cup semi-finals in 1998.

The Richmond UHL club now has eight players under contract for the upcoming season. Schutz joins Darren Wetherill, Richard Pitirri, Maxime Gingras, Kevin St. Jacques, Brian Goudie, Dave Shields, and Jeremy Wray.
