Richmond Names Langway Head Coach

Richmond, VA – The Richmond United Hockey League expansion franchise has named Rod Langway the club's first head coach. Langway, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, brings 21 years of pro hockey experience as a player and assistant coach to his first head coaching assignment.

Langway enjoyed a stellar 15 season NHL playing career with Washington and Montreal. He earned the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman in 1983 and '84. He was also a three time post-season NHL All Star and played in eight All Star Games. Langway wore the captain's "C" for over a decade in Washington. He also represented the United States in three Canada Cups. His outstanding career earned him the ultimate tribute when he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002. He is also a member of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame

Langway came out of retirement to help lead Richmond to a Riley Cup championship in 1995. He returned as a full-time assistant coach in ‘96-'97 after a season as a player-assistant coach with the San Francisco Spiders of the IHL. He moved on to Providence of the AHL as an assistant for 1997-'98 before spending two more years as an assistant in Richmond. He helped Richmond to the Kelly Cup Finals in 1999 and a 44 win season in 1999-'00. He spent the past three years in private business.

Langway was born in Taiwan but raised in Randolph, MA. An outstanding schoolboy athlete, he played both football and hockey at the University of New Hampshire. Rod was drafted by both Montreal and Birmingham of the World Hockey Association. He spent one season in the WHA before joining the Canadiens.
